In China, the pearl represents the Yin principle: it is an essential symbol of creative femininity. In India, it serves as a panacea; it is used against hemorrhages, jaundice, madness, poisoning, eye diseases. Modern Hindu therapy uses pearl powder for its invigorating and aphrodisiac properties. Among the Greeks, it was the emblem of love and marriage.

The name tourmaline derives from the Sinhalese "turmali", meaning "stone of mixed colors". It was already known and used in jewelry by the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the stone passed through a rainbow during its formation, thus capturing a range of colors. The Romans also believed that tourmaline had magical and protective powers.
